چکیده

Relationship groups are a construct which is particular for the representation of concepts in SNOMED CT. In this paper, the July 2008 version of SNOMED CT is analyzed to determine the usage of relationship groups. Relationship groups are used with 36 out of 65 relations, playing a role in 28% of all concepts. Relationship groups are used in the concept types: "procedure" (including "regime/therapy"), "finding" (including "disorder"), "situation with explicit context" and "specimen". Examples are used to extract the purposes for using role groups, after which alternative approaches are discussed. The results indicate that relationship groups can be replaced by a small number of types of relationships such as "has sign" or "has subprocess".

Representation of Part-Whole Relationships in SNOMED CT

In this paper we investigate representation of the part-whole relationship in SNOMED CT. We discuss the current approach, based on “SEP” triples, and several translations of it, which involve DLs at different levels of expressivity. We intend that our analysis will concretely inform the SNOMED community about the important tradeoffs of expressivity for their ontology, and help with future decis...

Learning Formal Definitions for Snomed CT from Text

Snomed CT is a widely used medical ontology which is formally expressed in a fragment of the Description Logic EL++. The underlying logics allow for expressive querying, yet make it costly to maintain and extend the ontology. Existing approaches for ontology generation mostly focus on learning superclass or subclass relations and therefore fail to be used to generate Snomed CT definitions. In t...

Debugging SNOMED CT Using Axiom Pinpointing in the Description Logic EL+

Snomed ct is a large-scale medical ontology, which is developed using a variant of the inexpressive Description Logic EL. Description Logic reasoning can not only be used to compute subsumption relationships between Snomed concepts, but also to pinpoint the reason why a certain subsumption relationship holds by computing the axioms responsible for this relationship. This helps developers and us...

Views of diagnosis distribution in primary care in 2.5 million encounters in Stockholm: a comparison between ICD-10 and SNOMED CT.

BACKGROUND Primary care (PC) in Sweden provides ambulatory and home health care outside hospitals. ICD-10 has a mono-hierarchical structure. SNOMED CT is po...
